How to apply a mass supercession to many items at once (linking new items to old items)

In the Linking articles we reviewed the process of linking one item at a time. This process may also performed en-masse using a text based file upload. The product maintenance interface approach is most suited when creating only a few historical links at a time. This article describes the upload based approach.

Supercession at a single location (productchaining.txt)

When you have many links to create at one time, you may upload a configured tab delimited text file via the data upload interface. This is done as follows:

  • Create a spreadsheet with each row representing the historical linking of a single item.
  • Column A will be the new item that will supersede the old items.
  • Column B will be the old item that will be linked to the new item.
  • Column C will set the Linking Type with 0 (full linking) or 1 (forecast only). In case it is empty DemandCaster assumes it is 0 (full linking)
  • Column D will be the linking date, if a linking date is required (the sample below assumes no linking date).
  • Save the spreadsheet as a tab delimited text file called "productchaining.txt"
  • Zip the text file in preparation for upload. The zipped folder may be given any name. Only the physical file must be named productchaining.txt
  • Follow the upload steps as described in the Manually Uploading Data article.

Supercession in multi-location (productchainingmultilocation.txt)

Same as above but location based when DRP is enabled.

  • Column A will be the new item code that will supersede the old item (max 20 chars)
  • Column B will be the location of the new item where the forecast will be generated
  • Column C will be the old item that will be linked to the new item.
  • Column D will be the location of the old item where the forecast history resides
  • Column E will set the Linking Type with 0 (full linking) or 1 (forecast only). In case it is empty DemandCaster assumes it is 0 (full linking)
  • Column F will be the linking date, if a linking date is required (the sample below assumes no linking date).
  • Save the spreadsheet as a tab delimited text file called "productchainingmultilocation.txt"
  • Zip the text file in preparation for upload. The zipped folder may be given any name. Only the physical file must be named productchaining.txt
  • Follow the upload steps as described in the Manually Uploading Data article.

Address the old items if necessary

The links will be automatically created and will be applied the next time a forecast is generated.

To disable or deactivate the old items from appearing in DemandCaster, please follow the steps described in the Disabling or Deactivating Items article.
